Shane Prendergast Injury Update

Shane Prendergast Injury Update

Point-to-point jockey Shane Prendergast remains in the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore having suffered serious injuries in a fall at Ballingarry point-to-point on the penultimate day of the season.

The 19-year-old, who is the son of trainer Luke Prendersgast, was aboard Jack The Snake in the concluding race, the seven-year-old maiden, when his mount slipped-up on the bend exiting the home straight.

After being attended to by the on-course medics, Prendergast was airlifted to hospital in Tullamore where he was placed in an induced coma for a time as a result of serious head and back injuries which he had received.

Speaking on Friday morning, the Turf Club's Chief Medical Officer Dr Adrian McGoldrick issued the following update:

“Shane is doing fine at the minute and remains in the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore. He went up to the Mater Hospital in Dublin yesterday morning (Thursday) as an out-patient, where he had a back brace fitted and has returned to Tullamore Hospital”.

“He will likely require the brace for 3 to 4 months, it just depends on how the bones heal.”

Commenting on the speculation which has been published elsewhere regarding his stay in Tullamore, Dr McGoldrick added:

“Mr Morris (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in the National Spinal Injuries Unit at Dublin’s Mater Hospital) has said that Shane never required surgery on his injuries, right from having viewed his initial x-rays. This is why there was no need to move him to the Mater.”

“His injuries are being treated with a brace which was fitted as an out-patient at the Mater as they were unable to that in Tullamore. But he has now returned to Tullamore.”

A native of Graiguenamanagh in Co. Carlow, the young rider had spent a year working with Willie Mullins before later moving to join Willie Murphy’s Ballycurragh Stables.

A number of fundraising activities have taken place to help Shane and his family through their recovery. Last weekend, over 400 people attended a benefit night in Carlow which raised over €12,500 through an auction alone, whilst a GoFundMe page has also been set-up to fundraise for Shane. Online donations have to date surpassed €2,600.
