Article From WINNERS ENCLOSURE

26 January 2010 North Tipperary at Nenagh, Sunday 24th January

North Tipperary at Nenagh, Sunday 24th January

The ladies open contest at the North Tipperary meeting at Nenagh saw a breath taking performance from the veteran Dun Doire. The nine time Park winner benefited from hold up tactics seven days ago when opening his point account at Kilfeacle under Derek O’Connor, this time it was the dual lady riders champion Claire MacMahon’s turn to play ‘head waiter’ on the son of Leading Counsel.

Held up well off a decent pace he was produced to lead at the last and then went away to beat the gallant Mattock Ranger in good style. He is now qualified to run in the  Cheltenham Foxhunters but there is a chance that he will take in the Leopardstown hunters chase in two weeks time.

Colin Bowe’s Wexford yard are currently in good form and he landed the opening Tattersalls five year old gelding maiden with the easy to back debutant Monbeg Dude under John Daniel Moore. The yard were doubly represented here but this son of Witness Box led before the last to beat the fellow debutant Imperial Policy in good style with the more experienced favourite Littlesilverfishes not beaten that far back in third. Owned by Wexford man Eamonn Doyle he has received a ‘wild card’ for the upcoming Brightwells sales and he looks likely to take up that engagement.

Another debutant Mambo Italiano was another to run well and the Brian Hassett trained Milan gelding was staying on when crumbling at the last and his turn may not be too far away.

Trainer Enda Bolger has been relatively quiet of late but the Limerick trainer was on the mark in the six year old geldings maiden with Zest For Life who was scoring on his fourth attempt ‘between the flags’. Stable jockey John Thomas McNamara did the steering on the Lord Americo gelding and having come to head the long time leader Smooth Approach he looked set for a trouble free victory but the winner wandered about after the obstacle and McNamara had to get serious with the victor before asserting close home. Owner Dermot Cox is a big supporter of the banks races and the winners long term target is the Ladies Cup at the festival in less than three months time.

All the money was on last week’s Kilfeacle runner up Wattstown Express in the winners of one but the money remained in the layers coffers as a last fence blunder let in the Paul Pierce trained Piercetown Rocket  and the Jason McKeown ridden seven year old took advantage to beat the luckless favourite with Forgotten Symphony back in third. The winner is trained in Wexford and is owned by Thomas Coleman who hails from the same county.

Liscarroll based rider Mikey O’Connor ensured that his trip paid dividends when partnering the point debutant According To Lizzy to victory in the penultimate five and six year old mares maiden for fellow Liscarroll trainer Margaret O’Sullivan. The once raced six year old looked to be in trouble as the front running Silver Skirt still held the call, albeit under pressure before two out but O’Connor conjured a run out of the daughter of Accordion from the last to beat the experienced Paul Cashman trained mare with the always prominent Godico well back in third.

Stephen Byrne recorded his fourth career win in the closing seven year old geldings maiden for novice riders on board Bonoman who was finishing the course for just the second time having finished runner up at Milltown earlier this season. Owned by Clonmel woman Marie Robinson and trained in Hugginstown (Kilkenny) by Seamus Roche the winner made all to account for the always prominent Brooks Dream.
