The restaged Stonehall meeting at Askeaton on Saturday attracted a fair crowd and there was some competitive racing with a couple of good performances to boot.
The six race card kicked off with a winners of one and the market here was dominated by Wattstown Express and the seasonal debutant Glens Boy. The first named was running for the third weekend in a row for handler Colin Bowe. The seven year old was highly unlucky not to collect 6 days ago when a last fence blunder at Nenagh robbed him of success.
The Barry O’Neill ridden gelding made no mistake here when coming through strongly to lead from the second last to beat Glens Boy, who was staying on again ‘at the death’. The Costello trained runner will soon be going one better on this evidence. The winner is owned by Kilkenny man Ned Fitzpatrick who is father of ace hurler ‘Cha’.
As usual the confined maiden is invariably a keenly contested event and though most of the money was for the Paddy Neville trained Fools Rush his chance evaporated with a blunder three from home and it was left to the Seamus Braddish trained Doc Doyle to come through to beat the always prominent Faith No More with Kilmurry Kid back in third. The winner is owned by a local syndicate which includes the trainers daughter and was ridden by Barry John Foley.
The most emphatic and promising winner on the card was the debutant Atlanta Falcon who recorded a “near all the way” success in the five year old maiden.
Trained in Galway by Paurick O’Connor and ridden by brother Derek this son of Winged Love beat some fancied rivals here in good style with Bertie Milan chasing the victor home and the experienced Silent Rage back in third. Owned by Tom Howley who operates the Easifix operation from his Galway base, the winner should make his mark on the track in the near future.
The O’Connor trainer/jockey partnership were most unfortunate to make it a quick double as their progressive six year old Tyrone Golden Rain looked set for victory on his first start in open company but for erring badly at the last. However that was not to take away from the victory of the winner Kilcolman, who stayed on well when challenged by the runner up from the last. The eight year old was landing his fifth points victory and in addition was making his seasonal debut. Trained and owned locally by Lisa McCormack the winner was well handles by John Barry and the lightly raced individual looks set for another profitable season.
Punters were on the mark in the six year old Pegus qualifier when the Enda Bolger trained favourite Outlaw Pete stormed through on the inner to lead off the last bend. Although the Robert Tyner trained Taken For Granted was making some inroads on the son of Witness Box when he toppling at the last, the winner looked to be going the best. The J P McManus owned gelding may now be aimed for next Sundays hunter chase at Leopardstown.
Racing closed with a five year old and upwards mares maiden and in a contest which saw its fair share of casualties there was another “near all the way” winner in the Johnny Ryan ridden Vinny’s Chance who came home four lengths to the good over the staying on False Messenger with one of the market leaders Magical Promise well held in third.
Trained in Clonmel by Sean Carroll the Moscow Society eight year old was giving his handler his first success and to complete a family affair the winner is owned by his brother Gerard.
