Trainer Liam Burke and owner Paul Barber like nothing more than to have a winner at the Carrigtwohill meeting. The pair appear to have a truly outstanding prospect on their hands in the form of Rangitoto who made a spectacular winning debut in the first division of the five-year-old geldings' maiden at Sunday's popular Co Cork fixture.
The middle leg of a hat-trick for Richie Harding, the Old Vic-sired Rangitoto travelled sweetly throughout and this mainly flat-bred bay, shared by Barber with Taranis owner's Mrs Angela Yeoman's grandson Charles Whittaker asserted from two out to beat the eyecatching Saved By John with any amount in hand.
"This fellow was ready to run last season, but Paul (Barber) doesn't really like running four-year-olds', "said Burke of Rangitoto, originally sourced from the late Tom Costello. "He's a very classy sort, there's plenty of improvement in him and he will now run in a winners race. "
Harding earlier teamed up with Saved By John's handler Terence O'Brien to collect the confined hunt maiden with Saigheada Beaga, a respectable eighth on his return to action at Killeagh two weeks previously.
Saigheada Beaga travelled with purpose in this 18-runner contest, the towering son of Beneficial bravely pulling out more to contain the renewed effort of Flatley by a head in the colours of the six-member Little Arrows Syndicate from Carrigtwohill.
The in-form O'Brien reported: "We will probably go for a winners with this fellow now and this is my first time winning this race. "
Margaret O'Sullivan sent out her fifth winner of the season when providing Harding with his remaining winner courtesy of Helen Mag in the five and six-year-old mares' maiden.
Helen Mag, owned and bred by PJ O'Driscoll, stepped up from her most recent third-placed effort at Killeagh by forging clear from the second last to repel Tell Me Rose (badly hampered at the third last).
Derek O'Connor will surely go close in his attempts to record an unprecedented seventh consecutive riders championship and he was another to partner three winners with Galway Jack crediting him with an initial success in the second instalment of the five-year-old geldings' maiden.
Galway Jack, trained by Paul Tobin for owner/breeder John O'Mahony, asserted from the second last to outpoint favourite Join Together on what was his seventh career start.
The Galwegian excelled by giving Dan Rohan’s Be My Allstar a masterful waiting ride to collect the mares’ winners of two.
Be My Allstar was put to sleep at the rear of the 10-runner field and she only commenced her move in earnest from the third last. The winning 11-year-old made her way to the front approaching the final fence and she pulled clear on the flat to dispose of the staying-on Witness Belle.
"We will go for a winners race with her now and then probably a hurdle. She came on a lot for her run (finished sixth) at the Dungourney meeting in mid-December and it's great to have a winner here at my local meeting, "said owner/trainer Rohan, himself incidentally a former amateur rider.
O'Connor, who also partnered a winner at Askeaton the previous afternoon, signed off aboard My Boy Paddy in the six-year-old geldings' maiden.
The Denis Ahern-trained My Boy Paddy took up the running after a mile with the winning son of Accordion easing clear from two out to eclipse the useful Poplebouchon.
The in-form Ahern divulged: "This horse is owned and bred by my sister Margaret Lucey. We will be dedicating the win to Margaret's father-in-law John Lucey died last week. My Boy Paddy is a lovely horse and we also have his five-year-old half-brother by Beneficial, who will be running in a couple of weeks time. "
Mikey O'Connor, who celebrated his 28th birthday this past Monday, was the only other individual to get on the scoresheet with the Liscarroll amateur steering Island Peak to a comprehensive success in the winners of one. Island Peak, whom O'Connor also trains for Imelda Walsh, made his way to the front after the third last to see-off Society's Best.
"We will go for another race with him now and the plan then will be to run him in a chase, "reported O'Connor of Island Peak, a graduate of the 2008 Goffs Land Rover sale that’s out of an own-sister to former Aintree Grand National winner Royal Athlete.
