The Liam Burke-trained Rangitoto proved to the main attraction at Sunday's Carrigtwohill meeting by annihilating the opposition on his career debut in the first division of the five-year-old geldings' maiden.
The middle leg of a hat-trick for Richie Harding, Rangitoto travelled with purpose before assuming command on the run to the second last obstacle. There was only going to be one outcome from here with the mainly flat-bred son of Old Vic accounting for Saved By John by an unextended five lengths.
"This fellow was ready to run last season, but Paul (Barber) doesn't really like running four-year-olds', "said Burke of Rangitoto, originally sourced from the late Tom Costello. "He's a very classy sort, there's plenty of improvement in him and he will now run in a winners race. "
Rangitoto is the first produce out of the 12-year-old Presenting-sired mare Kendos Dream. Whilst she failed to feature in three bumpers, Kendos Dream is a half-sister to two winners in Best Before Dawn and House Of Petals. Best Before Dawn was a versatile sort with the gelded son of Try My Best winning nine races on the flat in addition to coming second in the Belgrave Stakes, a listed race at Leopardstown. House Of Petals meanwhile won eight races whilst he was also the champion older horse in Holland in 1990.
The sibling's dam Pistol Petal was by Pitskelly and she won a handicap at Leopardstown as a three-year-old. She then was a sister to six further winners including Southern Music and Indian Lily. Southern Music, who went on to become a sire, won five races on the flat whilst he was also placed in two Group 3 events and he also triumphed twice over hurdles. Indian Lily had the class to finish third in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at The Curragh.
Pistol Petals' dam Wavetree was by Realm and she was a sister to seven winners including Babbling Brook who also finished third in the Larkspur Stakes at Leopardstown. This is the same family as Paddy's Stream and Aristocracy, both quite successful jumps stallions.
