Competitive open in Askeaton

The one notable feature of opens this season to date is the level of competitiveness which abounds in these contests. In recent years these races would generally attract fair entries and invariably they would be dominated by a handful of the top horses in the grade but though there have been a couple of dual scorers to date the level of competition and high number of runners competing in these races has meant that gone are the days that those wishing to ‘cash in’ on short priced favourites would have their ideal punting medium.

Last Saturdays open at Askeaton proved a case in point as four horses vied for favouritism and amongst those were On The Net and Travino who had finished runner up and third respectively to Christies Foxhunters hope Dun Doire at Kilfeacle.

However though both ran respectably in taking third and fourth spots in this race (roles reversed from Kilfeacle) they were upstaged by the useful Kilcolman on his seasonal bow for local trainer Lisa McCormack.

The lightly raced former four time point scorer has shown an aptititute for better ground in the past despite having scored on soft to heavy just up the road at Ballysteen when last seen in April of last year. As at Ballysteen when the 8yo had to dig deep to beat Camden Tanner the son of Shahrastani got the better of another close tussle here but this time it was the less experienced three time scorer Tyrone Golden Rain who came out second best to the John Barry ridden gelding.

On balance the last named came out best for the future as the Paurick O’Connor trained 6yo followed a similar route to the winner when brought from the rear to deliver his challenge and it was only lack of experience which saw the son of Rainwatch fiddle the second last when travelling the best and the Derek O’Connor’s mount looked the winner till erring badly at the last to hand the advantage to the winner who held the advantage to the line to score narrowly.

Tyrone Golden Rain looks a ‘moral’ bet to score next time but such is the level of competition in opens at present punters would be well advised not to take too skinny a price about the highly progressive gelding.
