HRI ammend Hunter Chase Ballotting rules

(Both Kilcolman and Tyrone Golden Rain above were ballotted out of the recent Limerick Hunters chase but will now enjoy protection for their efforts)

Looking back to the Hunters Chase at Limerick over Christmas it is interesting to note not necessarily the result but those horses which did NOT run. Ballotted out of that Hunters Chase were the following

Kilcolman (Winner of last weeks Askeaton Open)

Tyrone Golden Rain (Runner up last weekends Askeaton Open)

Shamrock Hall (Winner this weeks Clonmel Hunters Chase)

Castleview Mills (Aghabullogue winner and Clonmel Hunters Chase placed)

Obviously these horses would have served to give this Hunters Chase much more depth and quality and would almost certainly have created more betting revenue also. With respect to some of the horses who did compete the list above would appear to be afar superior.

We at p2p.ie brought this to the attention of Horse Racing Ireland over Christmas and to their credit they have acted swiftly to rectify this situation. In todays Racing Calendar there is an amendment to the rules regarding balloting in Hunter Chases as per below with the updated piece underlined.

vi. In all Certified Hunter Steeplechases

Protection from balloting/elimination will operate in the following order :-

1.      Horses which have won a Certified Hunters Chase

2.      Horses which were placed second, third or fourth in their last two completed Steeplechases in Ireland confined to Certified Hunters.

3.      Horses which have won a Point to Point Steeplechase in Ireland on and from the commencement day of the two previous Point to Point seasons, the most number of wins in this period affording greatest protection.

Until now every winner was treated equally regardless of whether they had Won one point to point or multiple points. This rule change ensures that horses who go on to win winners races or Opens will have preference over mere maiden winners and ensure the best quality Hunter Chase fields possible will line up from now on.
