Killeagh lifted the white flag on the season where Nicky Dee won the maiden on Burnt Oak in the colors of R O’Byrne. Burnt Oak won four before the season ended. Tom Costello was successful on Bit-Of-A-Skite for P P Hogan while Timmy O’Callaghan scored a double with W O’Briens Ballyvodock and Kings Wager for P O’Connor.
Champion trainer Willie Mullins took the Carlow Open on Atha Cliath a horse which he also won the 1983 Aintree foxhunters on.
At Carrigtwohill Caroline Beasley won the first of her two starts on Eliogarty in the Open Lightweight beating Kilbrogan by four lengths.
Dual winner within a week
Mrs J Magniers Colonel Heather scored two wins in a week under Ted Walsh at Castletown and Bray which were his only two runs.
Mark McMahon won the Open heavyweight on First Schedule at Askeaton beating Bit Of A Skite by twenty lengths. First Schedule won three races during the season while Bit of A Skite won all of his other three starts in 1982. Tom Taaffe was successful at Fairyhouse on Giddigongs for Jim Cash.
Shrewd Operator under Tom Costello got the better of Bowery Buck and Mike Riordan at Patrickswell by a short head but following a steward’s enquiry and interference the stewards reversed the result and placed Bowery Buck the winner.
John Sleator took the opener at Kildare on Bourdon for Matt Dempsey after Leeson Street and Timmy Jones unseated his rider late and Joe Gibbons was interviewed by the stewards as to why he pulled up on his previous winner Watch Closely Now five out. The matter was referred to the INHS Committee. Bourdon came home a distance clear. The farmer’s race went to Leapy Lady and Richard Kehoe half an hour later.
The Iveagh Harriers held their meeting at the Maze Racecourse where nine races took place. Paddy Graffin was the only rider to score a double. It was a frustrating day at Fairyhouse for Harold Kirk who was second twice on Lobster Claw and Sir Owen. Kirk rode two winners during the season.
Ronnie Beggan took an Oldcastle maiden on P J Beggans Chief Martial beating Lorcan Wyer on Burrowmount Boy for Mrs F Oakes. Paul Larkin won on Corryvreckan in the Open who went on to remain unbeaten that season with a perfect four.
At the Oriel meeting Cecil Mahon partnered his own Edenappa Boy to win the Nomination race by five lengths. Raymond Martin enjoyed a Tyrella treble on Sparville for L Phillips, Deep Rock for S J Martin and Out Argue for W Dennison.
At Thurles Colin Magnier won a maiden on Flower Master for Mrs M Browne. Anthony Powell registered a treble at the Bree Hunt’s fixture at Rathnure aboard Boonabaroo for Padge Berry, Vulelek for P P Hogan and Saffron Prince for Mrs J T O’Brien.
Dead heat
There was a dead heat at Sligo in the Nomination race between Liam Clancy on Ballybrook and Ken McGlinchey on Summerhill Lady who was owned by Peter Filan whose son Shane was lead singer with Westlife.
At Ballynoe Jimmy Mangan won the Open on Speedy Lady who is later the dam of Credit Transfer and Mr Ks Winterblues.
Stewards Enquiry
The Maze racecourse staged the second point-to-point of the season as the Route Hunt held their meeting there which saw controversy in the Maiden race for six-year-olds-and-upwards. Newpark Lad won from Fair Passage, Black Knave and Polar Flight but as these horses had missed out a fence they were disqualified and the race was awarded to Master Of The Sand and Raymond Martin who was the only other rider to weigh in as there had been interference from spectators and the stewards attached no blame to the riders concerned. John Turner won the following race coming home alone also on Andy Pandy in the Open. The mare Annie Sue won five points in 1982 for the Vance family.
At the age of 19 Tom Costello narrowly won the title by one winner from Nicky Dee. On the final day at Ballindenisk point-to-point Dee leveled the score on 20-20 aboard Sleep It Off for Mrs A Dunphy but in the final race of the season Costello steered Slippery Prince to an eight lengths success for brother John to nick the title on the very last race.
