Toppy Corcoran has passed away following a short illness

Timothy Corcoran, fondly known as Toppy, a very popular figure within point-to-point racing, has sadly died following a short illness.

A native of Aughnagomaun, near Horse & Jockey in Tipperary, Toppy has been involved with the sport over a long number of years, firstly as a rider, where he also combined race riding with training, and he enjoyed success when combining those roles notably in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

On the track, the likes of Sunken Treasure and Pappas Boy are horses that he is associated with, and his synonymous black and yellow colours have been ever present in the pointing fields in the years since.

In December 2010, Toppy saddled the Jamie Codd-ridden Bobby’s Last to win a six-year-old geldings’ maiden at Lisronagh. Siix months later, his daughter Una, sent out Don’t Tel Toppy in her father’s colours to land a six-year-old geldings’ maiden at Ballindensik.

Both of those point-to-point winners had been bred by Toppy, as was the case with so many of his runners, including his final winner under rules, Mountain Treasure, a debut bumper victor under Stephen Connor at Cork in May 2017.

A farmer by trade, Toppy was a popular figure with local handlers often bringing their horses to work on his gallops in Killough, and he continued to send out runners himself, right up to the end of last season, with Fleck Ivy, the last of his five runners between the flags last season, when running at Ballindenisk in May.

Toppy will be reposing at his home in Aughnagomaun on Wednesday between 5pm and 9pm, with his funeral mass taking place on Thursday 12th July at 12 noon in Moycarkey Church.

We send our deepest condolences to his wife Josie, children Liam, Ann, Una, TJ, Susan, and Joanne, and wider circle of family and friends.
