Portrush can not only claim to be the track that produced Grade 1 winner - Finian’s Oscar, but also the most northern course on the circuit.

On Thursday hunt secretary Hazel Kelly commented: ‘We are currently putting up the last of the orange fencing, Frankie Fitzsimons is here as the minute walking the course, so we will have hopefully have the going shortly.

We are getting there with preparations, all the fences are up. If the weather is good, as Portrush is obviously a lovely sea-side, we could get a crowd to turn up, so fingers cross. We will have a tea tent, the bar, a chip wagon and a coffee van.’

South Westmeath (H) at The Pigeons, Co Westmeath

The South Westmeath hunt lost a fixture in the spring, so are staging an autumn fixture for the first time.

Susan Scott, hunt secretary kindly told us: ‘We are looking forward to Sunday, as it will our 40th year in the current field at Listisson.

The committee have been working hard to have the track in order. We are doing our own catering, so will have burgers, pork rolls etc.. available on the day. There will be free children’s activities; face-painting, a bouncy castle and pony rides. We are hoping for a great day’.

Shillelagh & District (F) at Tinahely, Co Wicklow

First Race: 2.00pm

The first of four fixtures this season at Tinahely, get underway this weekend.

Hunt secretary Mary Dagg informed us how preparations are going: ‘Preparation are going well, the sun is shining here, they have been shock-waving the ground.

It will be watered but we won’t have the official going until tomorrow – Friday, when we have the Turf Club inspection.  We will have a chip van on the day, to provide hot food and minerals.’
