Regional Secretary Carol Ross Passes Away

The Point to Point Community were sad to learn of the passing of Carol Ross on Saturday morning the 13th July peacefully.

Carol had been a notable presence in the Midlands and Eastern Regions of Point to Pointing down through the years. She was secretary of the Leinster Association and took entries on behalf of many point to points including most of the Westmeath Point to Point meetings also through the years.

Married to Cecil (who died in 2015) they were one of the most popular couples in Point to Points for many years and in 2017 Carol was awarded the Personailty Award for her contribution to the Industry at the Point to Point Awards and was a worthy and popular winner - details of that award are noted below the Funeral Arrangements listed below.

The details below give further detail into Carol Ross' life and also the video which was shown on the evening which now serve as a lovely reminder to Carols enjoyment and contribution to the sport of Point to Pointing.

Anglesey Lodge Equine hospital Personality Award- Carol Ross

This award is for people who contribute to the sport and who give their time week in week out, making them the foundation of our sport.

Previous winners of this award include Frankie Fitzsimons, Richard Mulcahy, Frankie Ward and Billy O Brien to name just a few.

A native of Tallaght, Carol Ross nee Cruise has been at the heart of point-to-pointing in the midlands for many decades, acting as entry taker for the Westmeath & Longford Harriers, Westmeath Foxhounds and the Brosna Foxhounds and plays an important part in the Eastern Region.

Carol developed her love of horses from riding ponies, while her father, Tom Cruise, had horses in training for many years.

Her first job in racing was as secretary to Stuart Murless on the Curragh and in 1968 she married Cecil Ross where she became an important part of Cecil’s training yard which she also combined with hunting with the Westmeath Harriers for many years and riding in bumpers.

In the early years Cecil and Carol enjoyed success with horses such as Man Of The West, The Inventor and The Pukka of whom Cecil rode in the Grand national in Carols fathers colours.

Most recently they have been associated with horses such as Godsmejudge, former winner of the Scottish Grand National, Six Of Hearts, the Group Three Ballycorus Stakes winner and Our Eric, a Grade C Proudstown hurdle winner.

Unfortunately Cecil passed away in December 2015 which led to Carol taking over the trainers licence. Her first winner as a handler came a month later at Tinahely when Goldmineinthesky won, which was a poignant success for many reasons as the son of Chevalier was named after Cecil’s favourite song and was also bred by Carol out of An Bonnan Bui, a mare who won three times on the track for her late husband.

Her first double came a few weeks later at Oldtown when Goldmineinthesky scored again followed by victory with Derravaragh Lilly in the mares’ maiden.

Carol has bred horses for many years and enjoyed her best success with Home In The Glen who bred Kill Devil Hill, a three-time winner for Gigginstown House stud and who won almost €145,700 in prize money.
