Donnchadh Doyle tops December Sale at Yorton Farm for second year

Irish point-to-point form horses were once again highly sought after at the Goffs UK December P2P Sale on Thursday afternoon with Donnchadh Doyle again responsible for the top lot at the sale’s boutique home in Yorton Farm.

Twelve months ago it was the now dual track winner Classic Getaway who matched the record price of Jonbon when sold for £570,000 after his Borris House victory, with Saint Davy proving to be the big attraction this year.

An impressive eight-length winner of his four-year-old maiden at Quakerstown on debut in mid-November, the French-bred son of Balko was knocked down to Stroud Coleman and trainer Jonjo O’Neill at the culmination of bidding.

That proved to be the start of a notable sale for the Doyle brothers’ Monbeg operation, as Donnchadh also consigned fellow Quakerstown winner Aubis Walk who was sold to Peter Molony’s Rathmore Stud for £120,000, proving to be the sale’s top mare, whilst Donnchadh’s elder brother Seán sold his Lookaway to Stroud Coleman and Neil King.

That Ask gelding producing a significant profit for his connections having been picked up last year for just €6,200 as an unraced three-year-old, and his eye-catching two and a half length winning debut at Kildorrery saw his value rise to £170,000.

Two of first three horses home in a Kirkistown maiden last month realised six-figure sums, with Colin Bowe’s Champagne Town, who had stepped up from his Portrush debut to open his account by three lengths being snapped up by Gavin Cromwell for £180,000, whilst Crebilly, who had finished six lengths behind that son of Kayf Tara on debut for Gerald Quinn, was bought by Jonjo O’Neill for £100,000.

In all, five Irish Pointers reached six figures, whilst there were also notable returns for Richard Morrissey, whose Turtulla-winning mare Rockonsoph was bought by Gerry Hogan and Rose Dobbin for £95,000, whilst Mathew Flynn O’Connor’s Loughbrickland runner-up Issuing Authority sold for £90,000 to Highflyer Bloodstock.

Following the conclusion of the sale, Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent said:

“The Yorton P2P Sales started last year when COVID restrictions made it impossible to sell elsewhere and these sales could not have made a better start on the racecourse with 29 winners to date, including the Grade 1 winning Ahoy Senor, the Grade 1 placed My Mate Mozzie and the exciting joint sale toppers Jonbon and Classic Getaway.

“This quality of the Yorton offering was not lost on buyers today and we are delighted with the results that were achieved by an incredible bunch of vendors who loyally supported us with some of their best recent winners.

"There have been some fantastic pinhooking results and, whilst we would have liked to have catalogue a few more horses, the unseasonably dry ground conditions have reduced the number of top-class horses available at this time of year. On that basis, we are delighted with the results, and we look forward to continuing to build this concept in 2022 and beyond.

“As ever, we would like to thank the Futter and Potter families for welcoming us back to this wonderful venue and we are excited about continuing the fantastic role of honour from the Goffs UK P2P Sales.”
