SUMMARY
- The 2001/02 season marked the very first Autumn campaign and in doing so allowed riders to ride more winners than ever before which John Thomas McNamara and Davy Russell proceeded to do winding up a tremendous battle on the very last day at Balingarry with 56 winners apiece.
- The evergreen Liam Lennon took the senior and Northern Awards with a total of 26 winners and also partnered the top Horse in Joe Blake who showed unlimited promise. He fell when in command of Sheltering and Ten Poundsworth at Leopardstown but at Cheltenham ran a blinder into fifth in his first season Hunter Chasing to suggest he will be difficult to beat in the future.
- Mark Grant and Derek O’Connor shared a very exciting Novice title which also went to the very last day while Liz Doyle took her second Ladies title with a creditable 8 winners.
- Four riders were in contention on the last day of the Eastern award at Castletown but Willie Codd saw off Messrs Elliott, Moore and Dullea to take his first regional award.
- Fence Builder Billy O’Brien took the personality award for his services to the sport while on the Track it was a most successful year for Irish pointers.
- Best Mate took the Gold Cup, Bindaree the Grand National, The Bunny Boiler took the Irish National while Florida Pearl took three Grade One races including the King George where he took the scalp of Best Mate under former pointing champion Adrian Maguire.
