SUMMARY
- The 1999 season saw a second title for John Thomas McNamara with 36 winners putting him 14 ahead of Eoin Gallagher on 22.
- Gallagher took his first ever regional award with the Southern title while Anthony Ross took the Eastern title and finished up on 19 winners but his career was soon to move towards the paid ranks in England.
- Elegant Lord was the Champion Horse for the fourth time but for the first time since 1996 having overcome problems in the interim.
- Top track lady rider Caroline Hutchinson turned her attentions to the pointing field and her four winners included an Oldcastle victory on former Irish National winner Flashing Steel in the colors of former Taoiseach Charlie Haughey.
- Davy Russell not only rode his first winner this season but went on to ride 8 winners forcing a tie with Simon McGonagle in the novice title and sounding a warning that the best was yet to come.
- The personality of the year went to Mike Barrett who through the medium of Formcard provides endless information on pointing with his yearly book, weekly form book and race cards.
- 1999 also held one of the longest ever race meetings with over 200 runners contesting a 14 race card at the end of the season in Balingarry and it was fixtures such as this that first gave rise to many hunts restricting the conditions of some of their races.
- 1999 was a tremendous year for young stock that looked destined to progress. Best Mate won a two runner maiden in Tuam and nobody could have imagined the heights he would reach
- The Bunny Boiler, Bindaree, Cregg House Torduff Boy Call Me Dara, Northern Sound, Be My Manager & Southsea Native were all showing signs that the best was yet to come which was a particularly strong team to graduate to race inside the rails for one season.
