2005-06 Season A-Z AUTUMN Mark O’Hare takes the seasons opening winner aboard Lyns Rashar while Liz Lalor and Clare MacMahon both get among the winners. 9th October Loughrea Former Champion Hunter Chaser Never Compromise provides Katie Walsh with her only win of the season Mathew O’Connor rides his first winner aboard Going For Home A new course for the Mid Antrims and already two dual scorers in Native Guide and Penny Out who scored on the seasons opening day also. 16th October Clonmel A controversial dead heat between Mythical Son and Thembu Chief while the ill fated The Adare Man shows huge promise A new course for the North Galways was well received by those who ran horses but with only 37 runners was the smallest meeting of the season. Penny Out completes Hat trick in first month of the season while Derek O’Connor scores a hat trick on the day to begin his new record assault in earnest. Gordon Elliott rides on aboard Stormy Bob even though he has lost a bridle at the 3rd fence Charlie Lenihan puts up a top class performance in the Open to put him in the hunt for Champion Hunter Chaser but sadly would not be seen again due to injury. Arctic Copper pulls up in the open but more was to come Native Guide matches Penny Out by scoring an October hat trick. English Amatuer Sam Waley-Cohen travels over to ride for the weekend. A marathon eleven race card sees Derek O’Connor score a terrific four timer and Arctic Copper beats Climate Control in a top Open. 31st October Templemore Bien Bronze takes the 4yo Maiden and looks a decent sort while Deirdre Ryan scores her first winner aboard her fathers The Fairyhill Man on their own course at Fairyhill. Simon McGonagle scores a double 4yo Ballyvoge looks a high class sort in winning the 4yo Maiden while another 4yo Scribano Eile also makes an impression when falling in front in the winners race Some very decent winners including subsequent track winners Another Nation, General Striker, Ring Of Beara & Aux Le Bahn. 19th November Maralin 5yo Savati looks useful taking the Winner Of One while Thomas Carberry becomes another member of the dynasty to ride a winner when taking his first winner from his first ride aboard Me Tows Subsequent hurdle winner Swiss Hall takes the mares maiden Climate Control beats Champion Hunter Chaser General Montcalm who was making his seasonal debut. 20th November Tattersalls A point to point held in aid of Shaun McManus who was injured at the end of last season at Ballingarry. Riders pledge e50 for every ride as part of the fundraising on the day. Super Gale was most impressive in a competitive Open Biggest day of the Autumn with 159 runners and 12 Races. Another big card with 11 races, Native Jack makes a winning pointing debut and Truckers Delight looks an above average sort on the day. 4th December Ballindenisk 10 Race Card sees Native Jack score again and look like a top Open Horse although Climate Control held every chance when falling at the last. Native Jack was then to be for sale on the p2p.ie Horses For Sale section and went on the win at Cheltenham. Cheltenham runner up Beantown takes the 6yo Geldings Maiden. A divided Hunters Chase sees Savati take division one as the five year old continues to climb the ranks and Slow To Part just sees off Groomsport in the second division for Michael Cunningham and Roger Loughran Climate Control easily sees off Well Tutored and is fast becoming one of the most respected Hunters around for John Paul Brennan and Colin Motherway Ballistraw is another youngster making an impression and sees off Beantown by a short head under Colman Sweeney for the Hickeys. Arctic Times takes the first of his six for the season, Derek O’Connor scores on top mare Wont Leave An Oat and also on subsequent Hunter Chase winner Royal Ranger. 1st January Lisgoold Subsequent bumper winner Closed Shop wins the opener and could have been bought from the p2p.ie Horses For Sale section. The Empty Tin looks useful in the geldings maiden. 8th January Aghabullogue Whyso Mayo sees off veteran Dans Your Man in a manner that prompts the p2p.ie formbook to give him a comment of (Cheltenham Material) –one of the seasons more accurate predictions. As was the case in Dromahane Derek O’Connor scores on both Wont Leave An Oat and Royal Ranger but on this occasion goes on to ride a four timer. Recent Hunter Chase winners clash with Climate Control just getting the better of Ballistraw with champion General Montcalm back in third while Whyso Mayo can only manage a fourth placing. Paddy The Soldier is one of only a few horses to win on the day and have the race taken off him for prohibited substances at a later date leaving The Paddy Premium and Colman Sweeney to take the honours. Opening fixture 2006 in the North S C Byrne and C P McCavana both rider their first winners while eleven year old Joe Blake rolls back the years with an open success under new rider Mark O’Hare and back in the hands of Ian Ferguson. 29th January Ballon Early morning frost almost threatens the meeting but it goes ahead and subsequent track winner Snowy Morning takes the Winners race while Mark Molloy reroutes his Beaufort Beau from Nenagh which was called off that morning to win the last race! Another Marathon cork card with ten races and a four timer for Richie Harding Oradit returns from a layoff to take the Hunters Chase from Five Seven Live for Pat Martin and C J Moran Minotaur gets the clear round he needs and wins, Enda Bolger takes 1-2 in the geldings maiden but B J Foley is on the right one with J T settling for second. 5th February Tallow By The Brook takes the opening four year old maiden with Jamie Codd in the Gigginstown House Colours while ten years his senior Dans Your Man takes the open. A new course for the Fingals and Hunters Tweed, Fall O The Hammer and Bewleys Choice all put up decent displays while Ben Brabazon rides his first winner. Another close finish controversy however when Catcherye and La Carihuela are granted a dead heat in the mares maiden Recent p2p.ie Horses For Sale purchase Native Jack scores over the banks. East Antrims run this charity meeting in aid of Mencap and Michael Muck later to be sold in the Brigthwell Sale looks decent in the 4yo Maiden. Nebeltau takes the four year old maiden in the colours of J P McManus for Enda Bolger and J P McManus but there is more to come from this german bred… Brian Hassett takes the last three winners for a treble on the day. 12th February Kildare Extended Favour takes the Hunt race traditionally a good guideline for the Bishopscourt at the Festival which it proved to be. John Halleys Mad Fish takes the four year old maiden which last year saw Mr Nosie beat Ballytrim. Paul Barber’s Saynomoor takes a useful looking 5yo Maiden to open the card while Footy Facts is one to keep an eye on in the older geldings maiden as he goes on to be most impressive in bumpers. Another clash of the leading Hunters and another new result. This time General Montcalm stamps his authority under Kevin Power with Harbour Pilot second. Whyso Mayo exits two out when in contention. The O'Grady champion would not be seen again however due to injury. First winners for both A J Walsh (Loggan Lass) and S W Flanagan (Red Royalty). 19th Feb Kildorrery Two well above average maiden winners in Mark The Book (Derek O’Connor) and subsequent Fairyhouse bumper winner Arrive Sir Clive (B T O’Connell) Brian Hassett & Corky Carroll record doubles as Roger Quinlan ends a drought for trainer John Sleator who wins with Kings Promise. Savati looks very decent when stepping up to take another open and beating Arctic Copper to do so. Mark O’Hare scores three and begins momentum towards northern title. Nina Carberry aboard General Striker take the Hunters Chase with Ballistraw second and First Down Jets third. Tranquil Sea beats The Grey Friend in the 4yo Maiden while Balybough Roy and Lord Snow look like two nice 5yo winners. Opus Café wins the well touted 4yo maiden at this venue under up and coming rider Jack Doyle as part of a twelve race card Tony Martin & Johnny Farrelly combine to take the hunters chase with Newbay Prop who runs in the colours of Billy Moffett. Derek O’Connor escapes injury after a nasty fall from Knight Of The Dawn 6out. Carried off to hospital with what appeared a badly injured shoulder he recovers quickly to get back on the winners trail. 5th March Lemonfield J D Moore sports the Gigginstown colours to take the 4yo Maiden on War Of the World. Glenduff Bridge & Sister Phoebe clock the joint fastest time recorded by any horse this season when completing the 3miles in a time of 5min 32secs The 14yo veteran Western View takes the Open under Daniel Foster while Tidaro Abbey takes the opening Hunt race for the fourth year time The Eastern title comes alive with Colin Motherway scoring a treble but still having to give best to Jamie Codd who rides a five timer Glacial Ridge returns from an absence to take the Open Lightweight under Colman Sweeney Roger Quinlan takes the opening two winners on Kilbready Star & The Grey Friend while young Dary Cullen has a day to remember when riding his first winner aboard Clonroche Queen 12yo Big Zoomo returns from an absence to beat Stormy Tribunal by ten lengths. 17th March Cheltenham A whitewash for the Irish in the Christies Foxhunters. Damian Murphy leads home a 1,2,3,4&5 when Raymond Hurleys charge Whyso Mayo sees off First Down Jets, Joe Blake, Bothar Na & Savati on a wonderful day for pointing which includes former pointer War Of Attrition taking the Gold Cup. Derek O’Connor rides three early winners to assist towards Northern glory but Mark O’Hare strikes back with a late double Ballistraw beats Arctic Times to take the Tetratema with Corno Di Basetto third. Lancaster Sound takes the 4yo Maiden won in 1999 by Best Mate with Henrietta Knight in attendance but there was more than one hard luck story in the race. Midlands rider Ciaran Murphy scores a treble at the meeting and but for a wrong decision in the Winner Of One could have made it four. Shamrock Hall looks above average taking the concluding maiden. 25th March Limavady The Novice title swings towards Johnny Farrelly who rides a four timer that could easily have been more with two seconds, a third and a carried out when looking likely. Rowdy Yeats is a name to remember taking the maiden under J D Moore for Ian Buchanan Only four races are run which include three divisions of the first and the only heat of the second race. Deteriorating Ground Conditions caused the meeting to be cancelled which was another blow to the Cork Waterford region which had lost out more this season than in many previous years A wet and windy midlands venue saw few finishers but decent performances from Super Gale in the Open, Well Corned in a very decent mares maiden and Mr Dooley in the older geldings maiden A seasons topping 309 entries looked likely to produce a monster card. The torrential rain kept many away but it still required 12 races to facilitate the 137 runners. Present Gale made a big impression in the 4yo contest. Simons Girl takes a 19 runner mares final and looks useful in doing so. Although Katarino repeats the previous years success Beachcomber Bay and Bothar Na run well into third and fourth for the Irish. Deteriorating ground conditions saw only five of the six races run at the Northern venue but owner Betty Houston is not complaining as her pair Supalot and Supalotmore both out of La Wolf both score under James Smyth. 8th April Dromahane Serengeti Sunset comes home 15l clear in the mares maiden and looks destined for better things. Loaded Dice scores at Castletown The cheekpieced debutante Loaded Dice takes the Geldings Maiden under J D Moore for Ger Hourigan and goes on to top the pointers at Doncaster realising 70,000 when bought by Howard Johnson 9th April Templemore Another Gigginstown four year old winner in General Wellington as Ravens Run takes the second division and The Whisperer continues the high quality on the day taking the older maiden. 9th April Bandon Very much a novelty on the busy Cork & Waterford circuit was this six race card with good/firm going a likely factor. 9th April Kilmallock Monaloo and Crack On take divides of the 4yo race but General Stiker disappoints in the Open around this undulating course 9th April Tallanstown Johnny Farrelly scores a treble bringing him clear in the Novice title which Margie McLoone sees her colours successful aboard Dontwakedtrainer 10th April Tramore Royal Ranger beats Phelans Fancy to justify favouritism. 12th April Inch Presenting Copper looks a very decent mare indeed when taking the opening maiden for Donal MacAuley and Donal Coffey and more was to come. This six runner card includes a two runner winners race which goes to Bigjames. 16th April Dromoland Some well above average sorts at this meeting included Moncada Way, All For Luck, Duly Noted & Professor Jack among others on a day of quality. 16th April Stradbally The only rider to ride a five timer this season was Jamie Codd and to prove his Lingstown heroics were not a fluke he did it again at Stradbally to put the now injured Colin Motherway into a clear second in the Eastern title. 17th April Loughanmore A top quality 4yo maiden with Super Mate and Quarry Town dead heating while Holly Curran rides her first winner aboard Fan Two Step. Arrive Sir Clive confirms the promise shown by hacking up in the Gigginstown bumper 17th April Cork Oscar India beats Glacial Ridge to take the Hunters Chase 18th April Loughanmore Arctic Copper becomes the first horse to win the maximum 6 races in a season. Ballyvoge looks a high class sort when seeing off Ramsden Boy on only his second outing. General Striker puts his previous effort far behind him to see off Beachcomber Bay and Back On Top to take the Joseph O’Reilly. 20th April Cheltenham Joe Blake finishes a gallant third to Knife Edge. Jackie Kidd returns to the winners enclosure in the opener at her home track aboard Drumnavaddy Lough having endure countless bad luck in the previous year. Mark O’Hare was the one with the bad luck here however when breaking his arm and fracturing his hip which appeared to finish his challenge in the Northern title. Jennifer Pugh matches her twin sisters feat the previous evening by taking the opener board Doc Martin. Doctor on duty at the Northern Ireland Ladies soccer match nearby she managed to make her excuses to ride this late spare ride but was later to lose it owing to prohibited substances 23rd April Summerhill The first time in many years that a hunt advertised only five races to be run. The Meath & Tara’s doing away with their Hunt race. Two divides ensured seven races were run and plenty of quality on show too with Aggies Lad, Big Paddy & High Oscar all looking like names for the notebook After weeks of closing in on the record John Thomas McNamara rides a double for Eric McNamara and Danny O’Connell to level and then beat Enda Bolgers record of 413 winners ridden in point to points. Clockers Corner gave him the all important 414th winner to put the Limerick man on top of the pile of pointing riders. Point to Pointing is in mourning as young Dary Cullen who rode his first winner at Horse & Jockey dies from his injuries from a fall in the first division of the 4&5yo Mares Maiden. The Kildare based youngster was based with Paul Nolan and was the first tragedy within the sport for almost 15 years. 25th April Punchestown Abrams Bridge takes the Ladies Cup for Enda Bolger and John Thomas McNamara beating the Tony Martin trained Wonderkid and Johnny Farrelly. Whyso Mayo confirms his superiority over the Hunters and takes the Champion Hutners Chase from Joseph O’Reilly winner General Striker who has age on his side. 27th April Punchestown Extended Favour takes the Bishopscourt Cup for Jamie Codd while Enda Bolger continues his domination of the La Touche with Good Step this time under an inspired ride from Nina Carberry. 28th April Punchestown Winderkid gains revenge over Abrams Bridge in the Kildare Hunt Club Chase. 29th April Taylorstown Wexford raiders Broomhall Beat and Goth The Pearl take the opening two races at the northern venue. 30th April Ballybunion A small meeting for the re-established North Kerrys return with only 43 runners facing the starter. 30th April Loughrea Brian Hassett and Jason Titley combine with another youngster this time –Track Mac makes all to score. 30th April Dromahane Bright And Bubbly takes the 5yo geldings maiden and goes on to make 32,000 at Donacster 1st May Dawstown The second two runner race of the season and again a winners race where River Spirit comes out on top. 1st May Down Royal Ciaran Murphy and What A Lad take the Hunters Chase 1st May Limerick Mistys Express and Roger Quinlan take the Hunters Chase Presenting Copper beats Simons Girl in the p2p.ie Mares Bumper while Five Seven Live takes the Hunters Chase 4yo’s Ringmore and Bally Conn both are forced to carry 12st due to an error in the entry form but both beat their older rivals in maidens. Ballyconn clocks the slowest time of the season 8min 26secs Johnny Vance takes the Hunt race for the second year running all of 20 years after riding his first winner. 7th May Ballindenisk Joint biggest meeting of the year. 163 runners contest 12 Races A new course for the East Galways and an outstanding performance as Nebeltau is the first 4yo in many years to win the Open Lightweight 13th May Downpatrick Jamie Codd continues his purple patch winning aboard De Chirico 14th May Bartlemy Another monster late season card with 147 runners in 11 races. Controversy for the final winner where Maeve O’Grady has to overcome an enquiry before holding onto her first winner aboard Alpine Quest. 14th May Sligo A wet and windy Sligo sees High Oscar confirm the promise shown at Summerhill in the colours of Sean Mulryan 14th May Cullentra The jinxed South Eastern course finally gets to race after a number of ‘false starts’ and holds a 9 race card. 21st May Dromahane Colman Sweeney comes out on top with a four timer and one is a dead heat with Jamie Codd in the final contest. 26th May Stratford Mistys Express pull up disappointingly New course for the North Downs and Mark O’Hare makes an amazing recovery to ride the one winner he needs to join Derek O’Connor at the top of the Northern title. 27th May Stratford First Down Jets unseats at the third last 28th May Clonakilty Arctic Times wins his sixth of the season joining full brother Arctic Copper who has done the same. 28th May Stradbally Jamie Codd signs off from the East with a double and his first ever regional award. Champion Derek O’Connor signs off with a double bringing him to a new record of 72 4th June Ballingarry Hume Castle confirms Clare MacMahon retains her title in the Ladies section when taking the Ladies Open. 5th June Ballingarry Season ends with a highly successful two day meeting held by the Ormonds.
