Maguire suffers rib fractures in Cheltenham fall

Young qualified rider Finny Maguire was in the wars on day one of the Cheltenham Festival, as he was hospitalised following a fall during the National Hunt Challenge Cup.

The Cork native was aboard 20/1 shot Whisperinthebreeze for the Jessica Harrington stable, when the former Tinahely point-to-point winner fell at the 14th fence whilst in front.

A former CIT student who had been in action at Lingstown point-to-point two days earlier, Maguire was taken by ambulance to Southmead Hospital in Bristol following the fall where he underwent precautionary scans.

Dr Jennifer Pugh, senior medical officer of the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board, provided an update to the media on the jockey's condition on Wednesday morning.

She said: "Finian sustained rib fractures and a right-sided partial pneumothorax (collapsed lung) following a fall at Cheltenham yesterday.

"He has remained stable in hospital overnight and is expected to be discharged in the coming days."
