Shantou sires four-year-old debut winner on Sunday

Shantou, who stands at Burgage Stud in Carlow, sired his twelfth winner of the season on Sunday when Grange Clare Native found success.

In the hands of Jamie Codd, the son of Shantou took the four-year-old geldings' maiden at Curraghmore for Denis Murphy. The €45,000 store defeated the Donnchadh Doyle-trained Unbreakable Bond by two-and-a-half-lengths.

Over the years Shantou has proven his ability as a Group 1 sire of national hunt horses. Some of his stand out progeny have been former Irish pointers including Briar Hill and Ballynagour.

Briar Hill won his point at the second time of asking for Colin McKeever and Wilson Dennison.

The gelding, who cost €8,000 as a foal, has enjoyed plenty of success under rules for Willie Mullins and Graham Wylie with multiple Grade 1 wins.

Ballynagour got off the mark in Irish points at the third time of asking for Stuart and Ben Crawford. The 13-year-old has recorded five successes on the track for Ian Williams and Allan Stennett and has earned over £300,000 in prize money since 2011.

The Burgage Stud stallion also enjoyed a hugely successful racing career at three and four years old.

The son of Alleged won six races during his racing career amassing over £670,000 in prize money.

Some of the sires biggest wins include the Group 1 St Leger Stakes at Doncaster, the Group 1 Gran Premio del Jockey Clube Coppa d'Oro in Milan and the Group 1 Gran Premio di Milano.
