Kalanisi sires Cheltenham Festival Winner

Standing at Boardsmill Stud since 2008, Kalanisi has been supported by some of the leading NH breeders in Ireland and UK covering a select book of mares each year.

Kalanisi is by the classic-winning Doyoun (Mill Reef line), out of the Green Dancer mare Kalamba and  was a Champion older racehorse in 2000 when four years of age, having recorded six successes and five places from 11 runs, amassing approximately €2 million of prize money during his career.

He was a dual Group 1 winner, who won the Gr 1. Breeder’s Cup Turf at Churchill Downs and the Gr. 1 Champion Stakes at Newmarket defeating Montjeu on both occasions and host of other Gr. 1 winners. He also won the Gr. 2 Queen Ann Stakes at Royal Ascot defeating Danisilli on that occasion.

Originally retired to stud at HH Aga Khan’s Giltown Stud in Kildare, due to career ending injury, a hairline crack in his left foreleg, Kalanisi has enjoyed lots of success with progeny on the flat, including stakes winners Hasanka, Rajik, Alaivan, Sindirana and Enforce.

Kalanisi has also sired a string of high-class runners over jumps at the top level some of which include Champion Hurdle winner Katchit, became the first horse since Persian War to follow up a Triumph Hurdle win with a Champion Hurdle win the following year.  Other graded winners include Aintree Novices Chase winner Kalashinkov, Champion Bumper winner Fayonagh, American Grand National winner Brain Power.

English trainer David Bridgewater has a Son of Kalanisi that has highlighted himself as a very exciting sort in The Conditional, who was eight-length winner of his point-to-point at Boulta for Martin Hassett in 2017. The eight-year-old has most recently landed a Grade 3 victory on day one of the Cheltenham Festival in the Ultima Handicap Chase when coming out on top by a neck in a thrilling finish.

The Gordon Elliott-trained Malone Road, who won his four-year-old geldings maiden at Loughanmore in 2018 for Stuart Crawford is another points graduate that is an exciting prospect.  The six-year-old is unbeaten in his three starts under rules to date and was one of the leading contenders for Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham before being ruled out due to a knee injury, an issue which saw him miss the Champion Bumper last season, for which he had been favourite.

Kalanisi has also been enjoying success between the flags this season, having so far produced four winners.

Dylrow got his season off to a flying start when landing the open maiden at Kirkistown in the hands of Barry O’Neill by four lengths before going onto score an impressive one-length victory over Cheltenham Foxhunter favourite Billaway at Down Royal during Christmas.

Most recently Getzie provided him with another winner in points when running out a 12-length winner in the six-year-old geldings’ maiden at Borris House at the beginning of March for Claire O’Connell.

Russellsway is another, who enjoyed success between the flags for him back in November in a four-year-old mares maiden for Con McSweeney and was subsequently sold for £78,000 at the Tattersalls Cheltenham December sale.

Kalanisi 2020 stud fee of €4,000 represents a lot of value for money when one considers his excellent record, and some of the figures that his offspring are selling for.
