Bill to ban fox hunting

On Wednesday, the Animal Health and Welfare (Ban on Fox Hunting) Bill, will come before the Dáil for debate.

People Before Profit-Solidarity TD Ruth Coppinger is seeking to amend the bill, which currently contains an exemption that allows fox hunting, which would outlaw one of Ireland’s oldest and most deeply rooted rural activities. If the Bill were to pass, it would also ban trail hunting.

The Bill was first introduced in May of this year by Coppinger.

Independent Ireland and Sinn Féin opposed the initial step, but the Bill passed its first stage and is now at the second stage debate, which will result in a vote on Wednesday, December 17th.  Reports suggest that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael TDs will also oppose the amendment.

The Countryside Alliance has urged its members and supporters to contact their local TDs.
