Sporting John back to winning ways

Sporting John was back to winning ways with an impressive performance in the Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novice Chase at Sandown on Saturday.

Richard Johnson who partnered the son of Getaway settled his mount in rear before getting closer to the leaders three from home, he mounted his challenged approaching the last and kept on strongly to lead on the run-in.

The JP McManus owned gelding was last seen when finishing third to Fiddlerontheroof at Exeter in November.

The gelding started his career between the flags when winning his point-to-point maiden at Borris for handler Matty Flynn O’Connor.  The gelding was subsequently sold to Kieran McManus at the Cheltenham Festival sale for £160,000.

The Philip Hobbs trained gelding holds entries in the Sporting Life Grade 1 Arkle Challenge Trophy Novice Chase, The Festival Novice's Grade 1 Chase and the Marsh Novices' Grade 1 Chase at the Cheltenham Festival next month.
