Royal Rendezvous claims Galway Plate

Castletown-Geoghegan point-to-point winner Royal Rendezvous landed the coveted Tote Galway Plate on day three of the Galway Festival.

The son of King’s Theatre who carried the familiar colours of Dr Peter Fitzgerald was prominent for most in the hands of Paul Townend.

The nine-year-old was in front after the fourth fence and was never headed, he made a slight mistake at the second last but recovered well and kept on well gamely in the straight for a one length victory over stablemate Easy Game.

Royal Rendezvous was last seen when winning a hurdle race in good style at Ballinrobe in May.
The Willie Mullins trained gelding has now won seven races under rules and amassed over €200,000 in prize money.

He started his career between the flags when winning his maiden at Castletown-Geoghegan for handler Virginia Considine in 2017 and was subsequently bought by Highflyer Bloodstock for £130,000 at the Goffs UK Aintree sale.

The Fitzgerald family are synonymous with point-to-pointing as the Killultagh, Old Rock and Chichester Hunt previously held their annual point-to-point fixture on their land at Largy.
