SUMMARY
• The 1991 season can be summarized in two words-Adrian Maguire. Maguire is quite simply the most exciting young rider to grace the point o point field and conquer it. Many top riders have begun in points but none made the impression that the young Maguire did when scoring a record 38 wins in a season.
• 1991 was the first time that the Novice award was an under 21 event and Maguire in taking it is still the only rider under 21 to take the novice and the overall since Tom Costello.
• It was a terrific battle for the title all year with John Berry. Berry had ridden a six timer in the past but the flow of late season winners that Maguire produced even Berry had to give best
• On the 19th May 1991 at Dromahane a feat of riding was witnessed that many believe to this day was Maguire’s finest hour. He rode six winners in one afternoon and the only shame was that he had no ride in the mares maiden as he may well have gone through the card.
• It didn’t finish at Dromahane however and as hard as Berry tried to live with this rush of winners when Maguire won the first four races at Kinsale that he was eligible to ride in that was simply too much and indeed the winning margin that evening was four.
• Carmel Conaughton won the ladies title for the sixth time showing her continued domination in the section
• The Connaught title went three ways with Costello brothers Dermot and Tony sharing it with John Berry.
• The personality award went to the Editor of The Irish Field Valentine Lamb who through his publication had done much to promote the sport and sponsor the leading rider award each year.
• The O’Sullivans enjoyed a great success at Cheltenham when William partnered the Eugene O’Sullivan trained Lovely Citizen to success in the Foxhunters.
• The Champion Hunter Chase saw a particularly impressive display. Cool It A Bit under David Valentine took the Bishopscourt Cup on the opening day of the Punchestown festival and the following day turned out again to take the big one by two lengths and twelve lengths from Cheltenham winner Lovely Citizen.
• Among the newcomers to the list of winning riders were subsequent top amateurs on both sides of the water Greg Harford and Michael Hourigan jnr.
• Paul Roche and Kieran Gaule also got off the mark in ‘91
