Liam Gilligan is from a family steeped in history with his father Paul a Cheltenham Festival winning trainer, whilst his brother Jack is also a jockey. A graduate of the Pony Racing circuit, he did not have to wait long until he got off the mark under rules, partnering Nellie Pledge to success in 2017 at the age of 16. Following 16 winners as a Conditional Jockey, the Galway native made the decision in 2020 to revert to a QR license on account of his weight, with his pointing debut following at Bellharbour in February of that year.
