A graduate of the pony racing circuit, Conor Smithers had his first ride in a point-to-point for leading handler Denis Murphy in a novice riders race at Mainstown in January 2019 aboard Bobsabuyer, and rode in a four-year-old maiden for John Berry in that first season. Smithers rode his first winner aboard Dubai Dandy at Moig South in December 2020 and later joined the professional ranks at the end of the 21/22 season.
